Weaving for Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities

Meaningful Engagement through Making

At Shuttles & Needles, weaving is introduced as a hands-on activity that many people find enjoyable and purposeful.

A CALM, HANDS-ON ACTIVITY

Weaving involves focused, repetitive actions that create rhythm and continuity. For many individuals, this rhythm is experienced as calming and satisfying, while the process itself remains clear and predictable.

The activity allows people to work at their own pace, engage meaningfully, and experience completion through tangible results.

TOOLS THAT MAKE ENGAGEMENT EASIER

Well-designed modern looms make weaving easier. They reduce physical strain and simplify handling.

How we Support Families and Organizations

We work with parents, special educators and organisations to help select appropriate looms, introduce weaving in a manageable way and build confidence in everyday use. Training is provided to caregivers and educators, who then guide their wards within familiar environments. Ongoing support is available to help adapt activities over time, address practical challenges and explore suitable directions as engagement develops.

Frequently asked questions

How are looms selected for people with different abilities?

Looms are selected based on the abilities, comfort, and working needs of the individuals involved. Guidance is provided to help families and organisations choose looms that are manageable, predictable, and supportive.

FROM ENGAGEMENT TO POSSIBILITY

Over time, weaving can grow into vocational opportunities for some individuals, supported seriously by families, organisations and institutions. For others, it remains a meaningful and valued form of engagement.

Both paths are equally valid. The focus is on sustained participation, respect for individual capacity and long-term support rather than fixed outcomes.
