Weaving in Design

Instead of outsourcing material development or separating thinking from making, designers work directly with structure, yarn and material behaviour at the loom. Ideas are tested through weaving itself, allowing confidence and authorship to develop together.

For Design Institutes

With well-made looms and tools for design development, students can focus on weaving and design development than on managing the looms.
We support the setup of weaving labs for design schools, including loom selection, supply and installation and training for faculty and staff.
Loom systems range from table and floor looms to dobby and jacquard looms, along with spinning wheels, felting tools and a curated selection of yarns and fibres.

For Design Professionals

For designers working with textiles, understanding of weaving changes how decisions are made.

It builds judgment about materials, yarns, structure, pattern, drape and handle. Without it, material development is largely outsourced and designers remain dependent on others to interpret their ideas. This slows the process and creates a gap between what is imagined and what is actually made.

We work to close this gap.

  • For designers building or reconnecting with weaving knowledge

    Courses, Refreshers, and Cross-Training

Structured programs that introduce weaving. These include Pattern Weaving, Indian Traditional Weaving Techniques and refresher sessions for designers who want to revisit weaving fundamentals.

  • For designers working on active development

Studio Access and In-Studio Loom Use

Designers may access the studio for hands-on work, including in-studio loom rental, and access to the studio library and material references.

  • For designers and advanced learners

    Mentored Projects for Portfolio Development

Mentored, time-bound projects where designers work through a specific material or design problem using weaving, supporting portfolio development.

  • For designers setting up their own weaving practice

    Independent Studio Setup Guidance

Support for independent designers setting up their own weaving studios.

This includes help with choosing looms and tools, installation, and training suited to the designer’s practice, so they can work independently with confidence.

LOOMS IN THE STUDIO FOR DESIGN AND PROTOTYPING

The studio houses modern looms for hands-on design and prototyping, including multi-shaft table looms, Jack looms, computerized Dobby looms, SAORI looms, Rigid heddle looms and Inkle looms.

Spinning wheels, Fibre arts tools and a curated yarn bank support material exploration, allowing designers and students to test ideas and develop innovative materials and structures on the loom.
